Stamp: our characters deserve A CHANCE! by Jeshika-Haruno Stamp: our characters deserve A CHANCE! by Jeshika-Haruno
:bulletpurple: TRUE FACTS:
· Beauty doesn't make a character a Mary Sue
· Big boobs don't make a character a Mary Sue
· A tragic past doesn't make a character a Mary Sue (as long as it's realistic/fits the story)
· Being a tomboy/girly girl doesn't make a character a Mary Sue (it's just kind of cliché)
· A sexy outfit doesn't make a character a Mary Sue (as long as it fits the fandom they belong to)
· Being paired-up with a canon character doesn't make a character a Mary Sue (as long as the story makes sense and the canon character doesn't go OOC)

:bulletpurple: Also, I'll quote *kiss-the-thunder's marvelous comment on her stamp ([link]) :

"A character being paired with a canon character does not a sue make. (the creator is just having fun)

A character that's pretty or even gorgeous does not a Sue make. (look at the characters flaws, they often time balance it all out)

A character that excels in one area does not a sue make. (Now if they excelled in MANY areas, that's different)

A chaotic love life does not a Sue make.

You can not tell a character is a Mary Sue just by looking at them.

Having one quality of a potential Sue does not a Sue make.

A character is not a Mary Sue just because you dislike them!"

I underlined that sentence because that seems to be something that many people can't understand: having different crushes throughout the years is completely normal and it's something that happens to most if not all girls in real life. If a character is a Mary Sue for having a few crushes throughout the story, then real girls are whores :|?
Of course, I DO NOT support flirting with two guys at the same time. Now, that's slutty.

^ Okay, that wasn't the point of this stamp, just something I needed to vent about ^^;.

:bulletpurple: Of course, if a character has ALL the features I named above, then it is somewhat a Mary Sue. Again, remember that if wearing a sexy outfit is totally normal in the fandom the character belongs to (like Pokémon because it's the only fandom I'm familiar with), then it isn't a Sue-ish feature. As for having big boobs... Some real girls have big tits, others don't. The same applies to anime.

:bulletpurple: A real Mary Sue is usually the most powerful and possess an unique power/ability (like an invincible bloodline in Naruto or having the power to understand pokémon or talking their lenguage in Pokémon. Mary Sues are often the center of attention of the story, too.

:bulletpurple: And don't forget: characters without some Sue-ish feature are plain and boring. As *kiss-the-thunder said, "Characters with little to no development, pass (Litmus test) with flying colors."

:bulletpurple: GIVE FAN CHARACTERS A CHANCE. Just because a character possesses one, two or even three Sue-ish feature there is NO need to bash it! Who knows if that certain character also has flaws and/or a well-developed story?

Being a tomboy/girly girl doesn't make a character a Mary Sue (it's just kind of cliché)
XD eso me mato
O sea que si es tomboy es sue y si es femenina también lo es
Tampoco es cliche xD lo veo muy normal
No es como si el 85% de la población femenina lo fuese xD ya sea de una forma u otra sin importar el estilo que use

I only think Mary-Sues/Gary-Stus are any characters with no realistic flaws at all (except clumsiness, which is the WORST cliche of a flaw) just being perfect. And say they are way more powerful than any character from their specific fandom.
Like remember the undertale fandom, we had some sans fangirls whose characters, and their own self have no flaws, makes them a powerful, invincible, and immortal god, and mostly use Sans for their fangirlistc sex, then kill everybody else that also likes him. In which he doesn’t care, and still falls for that character.

Joetta (my Fire Emblem OC) is a female.
She is the Maid of Altea.
She is the younger sister to Prince Marth.
She is the older twin sister to Lord Bartel.
She is the warrior.
She used to have dark blue hair, but she dyed it black.
She wears glasses.
Is she a Mary Sue?

I hate Mary Sue's/Gary Stu's with a fiery passion, but some people take this label too far. A Sue is a character that has no realistic flaws and is loved by all the characters in a story EXCEPT for the person reading the fanfic. They cannot have 2-D flaws (stuttering, quiet, an attitude, etc.). Those are traits that ANY character can posses regardless of their personality. Just like in reality, you cannot be friends with everyone and neither should a character in a story. Being beautiful, having special powers, and other silly stuff that seems to trigger readers does not make the character a Sue. In a nutshell, if the character is perfectly perfect, you might want to start changing them.

Don't make Sues, make improvements.

Yuck. I hate Mary Sues... When I make characters, I always make sure they have realistic flaws along with realistic strengths. I have one OC (that isn't a human) that does have some special strengths, likes to help others, and acts a bit like the center of attention, but she can be controlling and a bitch. :XD: What is a good character without realistic flaws and strengths? (She pink thank goodness and not based off of me)

Also, what's an OOC?

sorry for bad grammar but the concept of a mary sue is very derivative xD
the oc can have realistic human defects and still be a mary sue or a character having multicolored hair or wings and not being mary sue everything depends on the execution on the story the concept, and even the perspective of the person

I don't know what an OOC is, but if you meant OC, it means Original Character.

I know what an original character is. :XD: An OOC is Out of Character. A good example is Batman, who is super serious, dancing all of a sudden. He wouldn't do that!

My OC is genderless, but uses female pronouns...
She's strong, but not THAT strong...
She has the body of a full-fledged adult (she doesn't have a big chest, nor is she flat-chested) and she looks like she wears make-up (it's a result of her powers being unlocked) but she's not noted as beautiful...
She's shipped with another OC...
She's a crossover OC (Steven Universe, Sonic the Hedgehog, and a bit of Naruto)...
She's a Porcupine (a very rare Mobian species) and a Gem (not a hybrid, a Gem made on Mobius)...
She gets character development...

Is she a Mary-Sue?

I once shipped my OC Suigin D. Blacksmith with Trafalgar Law from One Piece. No, it wasn't a lovey-dovey relationship, but rather in the sense of a mother-son relationship. It would be explained more in her original backstory. Now she's in a similar universe; with pirates, world-rulingish government, etc - However, everything is completely different from One piece, maybe besides the similar story. Suigin was made purposely to be extremely powerful (aka. she's a fucking god that's almost unbeatable/unkillable) - BUT her powers(fyi, she has weaknesses that match the amount of powers she has) are developed through her backstory and I'd have to say she's developed pretty well. She's unkillable for a reason(too long to explain here). However, I've had people call her a mary sue due to her appearance and her personality being the opposite of each other ("don't judge a book by its cover"). This and the fact I got bashed for shipping my OC with a popular character from a popular anime, I changed her story (almost completely).

Moral is, I should be allowed to ship my OCs with other characters, even if they're Doflamingo or some random guy from Blue Exorcist. Deal with it.

and this is why i'm afraid to make more ocs or show them to others.
i really wish more people would stop harrassing and bullying anyone who happens to have a mary sue/gary stu oc. because it
is really an very asshole thing to do, and being a dick to mary sue creators isn't going to help them make better written ocs whatsoever. and a lot of the times, the mary sue creators are little kids, just trying to have fun. obviously they wont know how to make a properly written character. seriously, what the hell happened to constructive criticism???

Actually the term Mary-Sue is used out of context...Mary-Sue is something that literally is unbelievable, not as in a character that's unique it's something that is unrealistic. Example

intelligence: 10/10
looks: 10/10
strength:10/10
speed: 10/10
dexterity: 10/10
ruthlessness: 10/10
compassion:10/10
age:12
rank: master
everybody thinks she's the most prettiest and all the guys fight over her and she started a whole war because she's so pretty, she also gets everything right on the first try and is perfectly nice, perfectly pretty, she can beat all the captains ( that are like 40 and remember she's suppose to be twelve)  the point is backstory has nothing to do with determining a Mary-sue neither does their style of dress. It comes down to how believable it is in the story, there is nothing wrong with a strong OC BUT there is a degree to which something becomes absolutely ridiculous.   en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue

"Your character is a succubus goddess, she's a fucking mary-sue!!!!!!"

I addmit it, goddess don't fit, I know.  But at least my character has flaws like: She can be killed, and has my same mental disorder I have in real life.

So like I said she has flaws, and she's not in love with every fucking guy out there.  I hate it when people assume my fucking character's a mary sue just because she's a goddess and a succubus, sure she has an army, but at least she looses in my fanfics.

exactly people use this term wrong like the way people use irony wrong...It only proves who does actual research in the end, The fact that people in general are going out of their way to ostracize and shame people over fictional characters is the worst type of "Cringe". Some of us are like 26 probably and basically we are harassing and degrading others over a FICTIONAL CHARACTER...take time to analyze it, let it load...your basically bullying someone as an adult. Something that grade school kids do, OVER A FICTIONAL CHARACTER. Over a fanfiction that will not affect you in any way (in reality), the time you've wasted by arguing over A FICTIONAL CHARACTER is the same amount of time you could have used to go to the upper left hand side of your browser and press the back button. This was a PSA for coming back to reality, it's been a while hasn't it?  Welcome back...

Basically like if your oc is too perfect, like a goddess that can't be killed, no one likes an oc like that. I tried to make my oc as far from a Mary Sue as possible, but of course, someone did say it was almost a Mary Sue. ;-;
